Eco-Depot is a free service for Rhode Island residents who wish to dispose of their household hazardous waste safely and properly.

Scrap metals cannot be placed in curbside recycling. The only metals accepted in curbside recycling carts are metal cans, metal lids and foil.

Scrap metal can be accepted, by appointment only, at Smithfield DPW. Please call 401-233-1034 x205 to see if your item qualifies and to schedule an appointment.

Large metals such as appliances, grills and exercise equipment are eligible for curbside pick-up. Contact Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule pick-up.

The Town of Smithfield does not pick-up mattresses and/or box springs curbside.

Mattress/ box spring disposal suggestions:

Please note: It is important to keep mattresses and box springs clean and dry so they can be recycled at no cost.

• When purchasing a new mattress, arrange for the old mattress to be taken away upon delivery. Check with your mattress retailer for associated fees.
• Bring clean, dry mattresses/box springs to RIRRC, 65 Shun Pike in Johnston, for recycling, during normal business hours. Maximum of three pieces.
• Bring clean, dry mattresses/ box springs to Town drop off events for recycling. Mattresses/ box springs must be clean and dry to be accepted for recycling. Check the Town Trash and Recycling Calendar for dates and times. Please call 401-233-1034 x205 for an appointment to drop-off a mattress/ box spring.
• Contact a junk collection or moving company for a pick-up. Fees apply

The Town of Smithfield does not pick-up electronic waste through curbside collection.

• There are five types of electronics accepted for recycling at no cost at Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, 65 Shun Pike, Johnston, RI during normal business hours. The accepted items: televisions, laptops, tablets, computer towers and computer monitors. See the Small Vehicle Area page for more information.
