Planning and Economic Development
What We Do
The Department of Planning & Economic Development helps shape Smithfield’s future by guiding growth, supporting local businesses, and protecting the character of our community. We work closely with residents, businesses, Town boards and commissions, and other municipal departments to turn community priorities into action. Our work balances economic vitality, environmental stewardship, and quality of life for current and future generations.Our Core Responsibilities
Planning & Visioning – Maintain and update the Comprehensive Community Plan and guide policies that reflect the community’s long-term vision.
Development Review – Review subdivision, land development, and zoning proposals to ensure they meet Town standards and support responsible growth.
Grant & Funding Initiatives – Prepare and manage applications such as the Community Development Block Grant Program and seek funding for local projects.
Economic Development – Provide data, resources, and support to help businesses start, grow, and invest in Smithfield. (Economic Development Commission)
Data & Research – Serve as the Town’s clearinghouse for land use, demographic, and economic data to inform decision-making.
Board & Commission Support – Provide professional staff assistance to the Planning Board, Economic Development Commission, Local Advisory Boards, Land Trust, and Conservation Commission, and advise the Town Manager and Town Council.
